For preparation, treat screen, coding, system design, behavioral, and onsite as categories rather than Amazon round names.

The first live interaction with Amazon is a 30- to 45-minute phone screen, typically with a recruiter or hiring manager. For Software Development Engineer roles, the hiring process also includes an online assessment with a coding test. For SDE II, that assessment provides 90 minutes for two technical questions, followed by 20 minutes of systems design scenarios and an 8-minute Work Style Survey.

The interview loop is the final and most comprehensive stage. It consists of four to six interviews lasting 45-60 minutes each, with different interviewers assessing different parts of your skills and experience. By comparison, the Product Manager - Technical phone screen lasts 60 minutes with a senior leader, divided equally between Leadership Principles questions and the technical product life cycle. An Applied Scientist technical phone screen lasts 60 minutes with a senior leader, sometimes followed by a second screen, before four 55-minute interviews with members of the science community; each loop interviewer typically asks two or three behavioral questions.

Your Software Engineer preparation should therefore concentrate on implementation, computer science fundamentals, system design, and concise behavioral evidence rather than borrowing another role's preparation plan.

Amazon does not publish how long the full process takes. It typically provides feedback within two business days after phone interviews and within five business days after the interview loop.

The difficulty comes from breadth and application. For SDE II, correct syntax and at least one software systems design question add concrete performance expectations. Prepare to move between implementation, design reasoning, and evidence from your experience without losing clarity.
