Which platforms run one-way interviews?

A one-way video interview, also called an asynchronous or pre-recorded interview, asks you to record answers to preset prompts with no interviewer present. Several vendors dominate the category, and you will usually meet them by receiving a link rather than by choosing one.

  • HireVue appears most often in large enterprise and campus hiring, and is the platform people usually mean when they talk about automated interview scoring.
  • Spark Hire is common in small and mid-sized company hiring across many industries.
  • Willo, Hireflix and myInterview serve a similar segment with lighter setups, often as a first screen before a live call.
  • VidCruiter combines one-way rounds with scheduling and structured scoring, and shows up in public sector and regulated hiring.
  • Modern Hire and applicant tracking systems with a built-in video step round out what candidates encounter.

Knowing the vendor is less useful than most candidates expect. The experience is set by how the employer configured it, which is the next section. Stage-by-stage breakdowns of other hiring platforms sit on the platform vetting hub.

What actually differs between them?

Five settings determine how hard the round feels, and they are worth checking in your invite before you open the link.

  • Retakes. Anything from unlimited to a single take. This is the setting that changes preparation most.
  • Think time. The pause between seeing a question and the recording starting, commonly measured in seconds. Some configurations offer none.
  • Answer length. A hard cap per question, after which recording stops mid-sentence. Practising to the cap matters more than practising the content.
  • Question visibility. Some setups show all questions upfront, others reveal one at a time. The second is far more common.
  • Scoring. Whether responses are reviewed only by people, or first ranked by an automated assessment. Employers configure this, and several vendors let them turn it off entirely.

There is also a practical difference in what the tool requires from your machine. Most run in a browser and need camera and microphone permission; a few offer a mobile app. Any of them will fail on a weak connection, which is worth testing before the deadline rather than during it.

Why does the same platform behave differently at two employers?

You may have used HireVue at one company with three retakes and met it again somewhere else with one, and concluded the product changed. It did not. This section explains what actually varies. These products ship as configurable templates, and the hiring team picks the settings when they build the interview.

That has two consequences for how you prepare. Advice you read about a named platform is only as accurate as the configuration the writer encountered, so treating HireVue gives you 30 seconds of think time as a fact is a mistake. And your own previous experience with a vendor does not predict the next one.

Consider a candidate applying to two logistics companies in the same month, both using the same vendor. The first allowed unlimited retakes and showed every question in advance, so it functioned as a take-home exercise. The second gave 20 seconds of think time, one take, and revealed questions one at a time, which is a different test of the same person. The invite email said so in both cases.

Can you use an AI assistant during a one-way interview?

No, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of detection. A one-way interview is a recording. Everything on your screen and everything you say is captured and reviewed later by a human, an automated assessment, or both. SubcueAI treats recorded and proctored rounds as out of scope and states that plainly, because a live assistant that reads an interviewer's speech in real time has nothing to read when there is no interviewer speaking.

What does help is rehearsal, and one-way rounds happen to be the format where rehearsal transfers most directly. The difficulty is almost never the question, which is usually a standard behavioral prompt. It is answering a standard prompt into a camera, alone, with a countdown running. Practising timed prompts out loud, ideally to the same answer cap, is what mock interviews are for.

Two things to set up before you record: a plain background with light in front of you rather than behind, and a test recording of yourself answering one question at the cap so you learn what 90 seconds actually feels like. Where live assist does and does not apply across formats is set out on the detectability hub.

FAQ

How do I find out how many retakes I get?

The invite email and the platform's own practice screen state it before the first real question. Every major vendor shows the rules upfront, and the practice question does not count against your attempts.

Do humans watch one-way video interviews?

Usually yes, at least for candidates who pass an initial filter. Some employers enable automated ranking first and review the top responses, and others review everything manually. Which applies is an employer choice.

Can I use notes during a one-way interview?

Nothing prevents it, but the camera makes reading obvious through eye movement and delivery. Brief bullet prompts placed near the lens work; a written script read aloud is visible and consistently scores worse.

What happens if my connection drops mid-recording?

Most platforms let you resume and some restore the question, though behaviour varies by vendor and configuration. Contact the recruiter from the invite email rather than restarting repeatedly, which can consume your takes.

Are one-way interviews the same as AI interviews?

Not necessarily. All one-way interviews are recorded and asynchronous; only some are also scored automatically. An interview conducted by an AI voice agent that responds to you is a different format again.
