How Microsoft interviews Data Analysts

Microsoft publishes the outline of its interviews rather than a fixed sequence of named rounds. The categories on this page (screen, take-home, case, behavioral, onsite) are preparation categories, not Microsoft's.

• The conversations. Most Microsoft interviews include 2-4 conversations with potential teammates and cross-functional colleagues, each lasting up to an hour. For an analyst, the cross-functional colleagues are likely the people who will act on your numbers.
• Format and work samples. Interviews may take place over the phone, on Microsoft Teams, or in person, and for some roles candidates are asked to write code, share a creative portfolio, or provide work samples. Microsoft does not say which roles, so an analyst should be ready for a SQL exercise or a request for a sample analysis.
• The technical conversation. Technical interviews are problem-solving based, covering technical excellence and core competencies alongside competency-based questions and questions about your resume.
• If you code. Where an interview involves code, you code in the language you are strong in, without pseudocode, in a third-party tool that runs and compiles it. For an analyst that most often means SQL that actually executes.

Microsoft does not publish how long the process takes for a Data Analyst.

The published test is problem solving, checked through competencies and your resume. An analyst should read that as: every analysis you list will be examined for the question it answered, the data it used, the checks you ran, and the decision it changed.

Data Analyst interviews in general assess:

• SQL and data cleaning. Joins, aggregation, window functions, and the discipline to find the duplicate rows and null keys before reporting a number.
• Metrics and dashboards. Defining a metric so two people compute the same value, and knowing when a dashboard is misleading.
• Communicating findings. Turning a result into a recommendation a cross-functional colleague can act on, which matters here because those colleagues are in the room.
• Business judgment. Choosing which analysis to run first and being able to say why.

You must demonstrate your own skills without outside assistance unless it is explicitly permitted, so the SQL and the interpretation both have to come from you.

Microsoft publishes one interview format for all roles, so the following is general practice for these roles rather than a Microsoft rule.

• Compared with Data Scientist interviews, expect less modeling and experiment design and more metric definition, descriptive analysis and clear recommendations.
• Compared with Data Engineer interviews, expect little on pipeline architecture and much more on interpreting data that already exists, including its flaws.
• Compared with other companies, the published details to prepare for are the small number of hour-long conversations, the presence of cross-functional colleagues, and code that has to run. An analyst who can both write working SQL and explain the result to a non-analyst is playing to the format.

Microsoft does not publish a timeline. It does publish the scale: 2-4 conversations of up to an hour each, which makes each one count for more than it would in a longer loop.

Difficulty comes from the combination rather than any single question. Within an hour you may move from a SQL problem that must execute correctly, to a competency question about a disagreement with a stakeholder, to a resume question about why a metric you built was defined the way it was. Candidates who know their own past analyses at the level of individual choices handle that movement well.

Prepare for the published format: problem solving, competencies, resume, and code that runs.

• Executable SQL. Practice in a tool that runs your queries and narrate your checks, because pseudocode is not accepted where code is involved.
• Metric stories. For each metric on your resume, know its definition, its known weaknesses, and a decision it changed.
• Cross-functional explanations. Rehearse explaining one analysis to an engineer, a marketer and a finance partner without changing its meaning.
• A work sample ready. Some roles are asked for work samples; have a clean, documented analysis you would be happy to defend line by line.
