What are the stages of Ascension's nurse interview process?
Ascension publishes its hiring steps and runs a separate hiring-event track for nursing and other clinical professionals. Screen, behavioral and onsite are preparation categories on this page, not Ascension's names for its steps.
- Application. You submit a separate online application for each position you are interested in and receive an automated email confirming receipt.
- Talent advisor outreach. If your background meets the position applied for, a talent advisor reaches out by phone or email.
- Phone conversation. The interview may start with a phone conversation with an Ascension talent advisor.
- Hiring events. Ascension holds hiring events for nursing, nursing support, imaging, rehab and respiratory therapy professionals every third Thursday of the month, where attendees meet one-on-one with hiring leaders about current and upcoming openings. Candidates can expect on-the-spot interviews and, for qualified candidates, on-the-spot offers, with talent advisors present to guide candidates and coordinate next steps.
Ascension does not publish how many interviews follow the phone conversation in the standard track, who conducts them, or how long the process takes.
What does each interview test?
Ascension describes who you talk to, a talent advisor first and hiring leaders at events, rather than a scoring rubric. Two practical consequences follow: the talent advisor conversation is a real screen, not a scheduling call, and at a hiring event the person across the table is a hiring leader who can interview and, for qualified candidates, offer on the spot.
Nurse interviews in general assess:
- Clinical judgment and patient safety. Recognizing a deteriorating patient, escalating, and keeping routine care safe under interruption.
- Prioritization under pressure. Which patient first, and the reasoning behind it.
- Teamwork with clinicians. Working with physicians, aides and the charge nurse, including disagreement.
- Communication with patients. Explaining care plainly and honestly to patients and families.
At an event you may have minutes rather than an hour, so the same evidence has to be delivered in compressed form.
How do nurse interviews differ from other roles at Ascension?
Ascension's hiring events are published for nursing, nursing support, imaging, rehab and respiratory therapy specifically; the standard application track is described for all roles. The differences below are general practice for nurse interviews rather than Ascension policy.
- Compared with medical assistant interviews, expect more on independent clinical judgment and escalation and less on administrative workflow.
- Compared with non-clinical roles, nurses have the hiring-event route, which can compress screening, interview and offer into one day.
- Compared with other health systems, the published features to plan around are the separate application per position, the talent advisor as first contact, and the monthly events.
How long does it take and how hard is it?
Ascension does not publish a timeline for the standard track. The published exception is the hiring event, where qualified candidates can expect on-the-spot interviews and even offers, which is as fast as a hospital hiring process gets.
The difficulty depends on the route. In the standard track it is the usual nursing test of specific clinical examples, beginning with a phone conversation where you cannot rely on being in the room. At an event it is compression: a hiring leader meeting many candidates in a day will decide on a few clear stories and a clear answer to which unit and shifts you want, so arrive with both ready.
How should you prepare for an Ascension nurse interview?
Prepare for both routes.
- Apply per position. Each position needs its own application; watch for the confirmation email and for a talent advisor's call or email.
- The phone conversation. A short account of your licensure, specialty, shifts and why this position, plus one or two clinical stories you can tell clearly over the phone.
- Event-ready. Bring copies of your resume and be prepared to interview on the spot with a hiring leader; know which sites and units you would accept.
- Clinical stories. Four or five incidents showing judgment, prioritization, teamwork and patient communication, each with the situation, your action and the outcome.
- Rehearse aloud. A mock interview with SubcueAI lets you practice short, complete answers of the kind a phone screen or an event interview rewards.
