Does HireVue detect AI?

By Aaron Cao · Updated

HireVue does not publish an AI-answer detector for spoken video responses. What it does is record you on camera, score the content of what you say, and run plagiarism checks on coding tasks. A recorded camera makes reading from a screen visible on its own.

What a HireVue interview is actually measuring

The worry behind this question is usually specific: can something in the software tell that an answer was not mine. This section separates what HireVue scores from what it polices, because those are different systems. In short, it scores the substance of your recorded answer, and it does not run a public AI-authorship test on your speech.

Most HireVue rounds are on-demand recordings. You read a question on screen, get a short think period, then record an answer inside a time limit with a limited number of takes. The scoring looks at the content and structure of what you say, matched against the competencies the employer selected. HireVue stopped using facial analysis in its assessments, so the older worry about micro-expressions being graded no longer describes the product.

The camera is the detection layer

There is no need for a clever detector when a reviewer can watch the recording. Eyes tracking across a screen, a flat reading cadence, a pause before every sentence: these read as obviously as they sound, and the recording is permanent. A reviewer can rewatch it, and so can the hiring manager.

Consider a concrete case. A data analyst records four HireVue answers with a script open on a second monitor. Each answer is technically correct and each one has the same rhythm, with the eyes drifting to the left before every clause. The reviewer cannot prove anything and does not need to; the recordings simply feel rehearsed off a page, and the candidate does not advance. Nothing was detected in a software sense. It was watched.

The broader map of what interview software observes is on the detectability topic hub.

Coding tasks are a separate system

If your HireVue invitation includes a technical coding exercise, treat it as a different product with different rules. Code submissions carry the checks that any assessment platform runs: similarity scoring against a large body of prior and public code, plus logging of what happens inside the editor. A pasted solution that thousands of candidates also submitted raises a similarity flag whether or not anyone suspects a specific tool.

That flag goes into a report a human reads. It invites a follow-up question rather than triggering an automatic rejection, which is why companies pair the exercise with a live conversation about the same code.

Where SubcueAI fits, and where it does not

SubcueAI is built for live, spoken interviews. The native macOS and Windows app captures system audio and your microphone and shows suggestions in a floating local overlay; the browser extension's Side Panel does the same for a call running in a Chromium tab, capturing that tab's audio only. No meeting bot joins the call, and nothing is injected into the meeting page.

A HireVue on-demand interview is none of those things. There is no live conversation to follow, you are on camera the whole time, and the output is a recording someone will watch. Aaron Cao, founder of SubcueAI, kept recorded and proctored formats explicitly out of scope rather than implying an overlay would go unnoticed on a video someone can replay.

What genuinely moves a HireVue result is rehearsal. Recording timed answers on the mock interview page builds the habit of leading with your main point inside the clock, which is exactly what the format rewards.

FAQ

Can HireVue tell if I read from a script?

There is no published script detector, but a human reviewer watching the recording usually can. Eye movement across a screen and an even reading cadence are visible on video. Notes as short bullets, glanced at rather than read, look very different.

Does HireVue analyse my face or tone?

HireVue stopped using facial analysis in its assessments. Scoring is based on the content and structure of your spoken answer against the competencies the employer selected, not on micro-expressions.

Can I use an AI assistant during a HireVue interview?

SubcueAI does not support it. The format is recorded, on camera, and has no live interviewer to respond to, so recorded interviews are out of scope. We say that plainly rather than claiming an overlay is invisible on a replayable video.

Are HireVue answers reviewed by a person or only by software?

It varies by employer. Some review every recording, some review only candidates who clear an automated score, some use the video purely as a reference in a later round. Assume a person will watch it.

How many takes do I get?

The employer configures think time and the number of takes per question, and some allow only one. The practice question at the start of the session tells you the settings for your interview before anything is scored.
