McKinsey & Company says every candidate has at least one individual interview. For most client-facing roles, a personal experience interview is followed by a problem-solving interview. For the personal experience interview, McKinsey & Company recommends preparing two personal examples that cover accomplishments and challenges.

The problem-solving interview, also called a case interview, uses a business case to evaluate analytical thinking and the candidate’s approach to complex problems. Solve is a gamified assessment of natural problem-solving ability, and McKinsey & Company says candidates do not need to prepare for it. Depending on the role, an expertise interview may include coding challenges, problem-solving tasks, or another role-specific exercise.

For preparation, treat screen, behavioral, case, presentation, and onsite as categories rather than McKinsey & Company round names.

In Product Manager interviews generally, each preparation category calls for a different form of evidence.

• Screen: Explain your experience, product decisions, and interest with clarity.
• Behavioral: Show cross-functional leadership through specific actions, obstacles, and results.
• Case: Structure an ambiguous problem, test assumptions, analyze evidence, and reach a defensible recommendation.
• Presentation: Communicate priorities, tradeoffs, metrics, and an execution path.
• Onsite: Maintain consistent product judgment across different conversations and exercises.

For the McKinsey & Company problem-solving interview specifically, keep the stated evaluation in view: analytical thinking and your approach to complex problems. Make your reasoning visible rather than offering only a conclusion.

The Product Manager difference lies in the evidence you choose. When practicing a business case, connect the analysis to user needs, business goals, prioritization, success measures, and execution risks. In personal examples, emphasize how you made decisions and aligned people across functions.

An expertise interview may contain coding challenges, problem-solving tasks, or other role-specific exercises, depending on the role. Do not assume it will take the form of a product exercise or presentation. Build your preparation around the formats named in your invitation and the broad formats McKinsey & Company describes.
