Coinbase Interview Process: What Each Stage Tests
By Aaron Cao · Updated

Coinbase describes six stages: application review, a recruiter screen, a structured assessment, up to four 1:1 interviews over Google Meet, a work trial presentation, and an offer review signed off by its top executives. Engineers take a live coding interview instead of the work trial.
What are the six stages of the Coinbase interview?
Coinbase published its hiring process in a March 2024 post titled How to interview at Coinbase. It says the process takes about 60 days on average and runs through six stages, usually in this order, though the order can vary by role.
- Application review. Recruiters read your resume and LinkedIn profile against the role. Coinbase states that every application is reviewed and approximately 5% move past this stage, and it names verbose, generic or careless resumes as red flags.
- Recruiter screen. Questions about your experience, why the Coinbase mission resonates with you, its cultural tenets, and your current level of crypto experience or interest. Coinbase says it shares leveling and compensation for the role in this call.
- Structured assessment. About 30 minutes, measuring cognitive ability (logical, spatial, verbal and mathematical reasoning) and culture alignment. Product, Engineering and Design candidates also complete a CodeSignal technical assessment.
- 1:1 interviews. Up to four, each with a different focus that is shared with you in advance, held virtually over Google Meet and sometimes back to back.
- Work trial. You prepare a solution to a business scenario and present it to the panel in a 30-minute call: 10-15 minutes of presenting, then questions.
- Offer review. The panel shares feedback, the hiring manager or executive decides, and Coinbase says its CEO Brian Armstrong or COO Emilie Choi reviews every offer.
Treat this as Coinbase's own published baseline, not a guarantee. The post is from 2024, and your recruiter's description of your loop is the one to plan around. A clear, specific resume matters more here than at most companies, and the free resume builder is a quick way to tighten one.
How is the engineering loop different?
Coinbase's post says engineering candidates do not get the work-trial presentation. They take a live coding interview at an earlier stage instead, in addition to the CodeSignal assessment that Product, Engineering and Design applicants complete. Code gets tested twice before an engineer reaches the end of the process.
Picture a backend engineer applying to a Coinbase trading team. That candidate should expect a scored CodeSignal test, then live coding on a video call, then 1:1 conversations about design and past work, with each interviewer's focus known ahead of time. Talking through trade-offs out loud is the skill that carries across all three. The coding and system-design guides cover how those rounds usually run.
Is there an AI interviewer at Coinbase?
For some roles, yes. In a June 2025 post, Coinbase's Chief People Officer L.J. Brock described a pilot in which applicants who pass resume review complete a 15-minute screen with an AI interviewer that asks about qualifications and experience and answers candidate questions. The pilot list includes roles such as Machine Learning Engineer, Product Manager I (Consumer) and backend software engineering roles, and the post states a goal of extending AI screens to all eligible positions by the end of 2025. During the pilot, a recruiter also reviewed each screen, and the recruiter's score decided who progressed.
The same post says Coinbase uses an in-house AI tool to sort applications for select locations and roles outside the EU and UK, with a recruiter still reviewing each qualified applicant. Neither post says whether candidates may use AI tools in their own interviews, so ask your recruiter rather than assume.
Can an AI interview assistant help in a Coinbase interview?
It is fair to wonder whether a live assistant fits a process this structured. This section covers where one can help, where it cannot, and what to practice instead. In short, only the conversational rounds are a technical fit, and even there the rules are yours to confirm first.
The 1:1 interviews run on Google Meet. SubcueAI can listen through its desktop app for macOS and Windows, or through its Chromium browser extension, which captures only the Meet tab's audio. Neither adds a bot to the call or injects anything into the meeting page. The parts that do not fit are the timed assessment and CodeSignal, which are scored tests, and the work trial, where you share your screen with the panel. A shared screen or a proctored test is outside what any overlay can safely handle, and Coinbase has not published a rule allowing live AI help.
The stronger use of AI here is preparation. Rehearse the recruiter screen's mission and crypto questions and a 10-15 minute work-trial presentation in a mock interview, and read how the live assistant works on the tutorial page before any call.
