Frontend Developer Mock Interview: How to Practice Each Round
By Aaron Cao · Updated

Rehearse the rounds a frontend loop actually runs: a JavaScript and browser fundamentals screen, a live UI build in a shared editor, and a component or front-end system design discussion. Talk while you build, keep time, and have your practice partner change a requirement halfway through.
What rounds should a frontend mock interview cover?
A useful mock copies the structure of the real loop rather than quizzing you at random. Most frontend loops include some mix of these rounds:
- Fundamentals screen. Closures, the event loop, how the browser turns HTML and CSS into pixels, and what makes a page slow.
- Live UI build. An autocomplete, a modal, tabs or a paginated table, built in a shared editor in plain JavaScript or the framework the job uses.
- Front-end system design. Designing a component or a page, such as a news feed or an image gallery: the data it needs, where state lives, loading and error handling, performance and accessibility.
- Behavioural. A disagreement with a designer, a performance problem you fixed, a release that went wrong.
The questions themselves are listed on the frontend developer interview questions page. The mock is where you practice delivering them: thinking aloud, handling interruptions and finishing inside the time.
How do you run the live UI build on your own?
Building a widget alone at your desk feels nothing like building it while someone watches, and that gap is what catches most candidates. This section shows how to close it. The method is simple: rehearse under the same conditions as the real round, out loud, with a timer and a mid-build change.
A frontend developer preparing for a loop at a mid-size e-commerce company practiced building an autocomplete. In the first attempt he went straight to styling the dropdown; his partner then asked what happens when a slow response arrives after a faster one, and whether the list works from the keyboard. In the second attempt he stated a plan before typing: the input, a debounced request, ignoring stale responses, arrow keys and Enter, the right ARIA attributes, then styling last. Halfway through, the partner added an empty-results state, and he handled it without losing the thread.
Use the length the recruiter gave you, turn off AI code completion, and ask your partner to add one requirement mid-build, such as keyboard support, a loading state or a character limit.
What feedback should you collect after each mock?
- Requirements. Did you ask clarifying questions before writing code?
- Narration. Could your partner follow why you chose each approach?
- States. Did you handle loading, error and empty states, or only the happy path?
- Accessibility. Does it work with the keyboard, and do controls have labels?
- Checking as you go. Did you run it in the browser early, or only at the end?
- Design round. Did you cover the data flow, where state lives, performance and at least one trade-off?
For the discussion rounds, the mock interview tool asks questions based on your resume and target job, follows up on your answers, and keeps a transcript you can review afterwards.
Where does a live assistant fit in the real frontend interview?
In the conversational parts of a video interview, such as the fundamentals screen, the design discussion and behavioural questions, SubcueAI transcribes the interviewer and drafts answer points in a local overlay. It runs as a desktop app on macOS or Windows, or as a browser extension in Chrome or Edge, and no bot joins the Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams call.
Be clear about the limits. A live build in a shared editor or over screen share is fully visible, proctored online assessments are out of scope, and a take-home is your own work. The build skill has to come from practice, which is what the mock is for. More practice guides are in the mock interviews hub.
