MLOps Interview Questions
By Aaron Cao · Updated

MLOps interviews test whether you can get models into production and keep them healthy: reproducible training pipelines, model versioning and registries, serving patterns, monitoring for drift, and CI/CD for models. Most loops add an ML system design round and questions on Docker, Kubernetes and a cloud ML platform.
What does an MLOps interview actually test?
Candidates coming from data science often prepare for model theory and are surprised by how little of it appears. This section explains what MLOps interviewers are really checking, so your preparation matches the job. The short answer is operational judgment: can you ship a model reliably, and can you tell when it has quietly stopped working?
Three themes carry most loops. The first is reproducibility: could someone rebuild last month's model exactly, with the same data snapshot, code and dependencies? The second is deployment: batch versus online inference, rollout strategies, and rollback. The third is monitoring: what you measure after launch when labels arrive late or never.
Machine learning theory still shows up, but at the level of understanding what your pipeline is running. Deeper modeling questions live on the machine learning interview questions page in the question banks.
Which MLOps questions come up most?
- How do you version data, code and models so a training run can be reproduced?
- What goes in a model registry, and how does a model move from staging to production?
- Batch scoring versus a real-time endpoint: how do you choose, and what changes in the infrastructure?
- What is training-serving skew, and how does a feature store help prevent it?
- Explain data drift versus concept drift. How would you detect each without fresh labels?
- Describe a canary or shadow deployment for a new model version. What would make you roll back?
- What does CI/CD look like for a model, as opposed to ordinary application code?
- How do you schedule and retry a multi-step training pipeline, and what tool would you use?
- How would you containerize a model and serve it on Kubernetes? What about GPU scheduling?
Tools come up by name, commonly MLflow, Kubeflow, Airflow, SageMaker, Vertex AI or Azure Machine Learning. Interviewers rarely require a specific one; they want to hear that you understand what the tool is doing and could learn theirs.
What does the MLOps system design round look like?
Many loops include a design session where you build an end-to-end pipeline on a whiteboard or shared document. Typical prompts are a fraud scoring service, a recommendation model retrained weekly, or a document classifier with a human review queue.
A platform engineer interviewing for an ML infrastructure role was asked to design retraining for a demand forecasting model. They started with the data contract and how late data would be handled, then covered the scheduled pipeline, validation gates before registry promotion, a shadow deployment, and the drift dashboard that would trigger the next retrain. Starting from data and failure modes, not from the model, is what made the answer land.
Cover the full loop: ingestion and validation, feature computation, training, evaluation gates, registry, serving, monitoring and the feedback path. Name the trade-offs you are making on cost, latency and freshness.
How do you practice so it transfers to the real round?
MLOps answers are explanations of systems, and those are hard to deliver cleanly without saying them aloud first. Pick three questions from the list, explain each to a timer in under two minutes, then run one design prompt end to end. The mock interview tool can play the interviewer and ask the follow-up you did not prepare for.
In live video rounds, SubcueAI transcribes the interviewer and drafts a structured answer from the desktop app or the browser extension's Side Panel, with no bot joining the call. Take-home projects, proctored coding tests and anything on a shared screen are outside what it covers, so the system knowledge itself has to be yours.
